Cosmetic Dentistry refer to any dental work that improves the appearance (though not necessarily the functionality) of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement in dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment, and overall smile appearance.
Cosmetic dentistry involves: Smile Makeover
- the addition of a dental material to teeth or gums examples: bonding, porcelain veneers (laminates), crowns (caps), gum grafts
- the removal of tooth structure or gums examples: enameloplasty, gingivectomy
- neither adding nor removing dental materials, tooth structure, or gums examples: teeth whitening (bleaching), laser whitening, gum depigmentation
- straightening of teeth accompanied by improvement in appearance of face orthodontics
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
Sometimes the teeth are quite small in relation to the gum tissue. This can create an unattractive "gummy" smile. An uneven gum line can also be distracting.
The gum line, and the bone just beneath the gum line, can be lowered to change the appearance of your smile. This can create a more even gum line or make the teeth appear longer. "Gingival (gum) contouring" is the process of recontouring the gum only. "Crown lengthening" refers to recontouring of both gum and supporting bone.
Procedure: A local anesthetic is administered, and the excess gum and bone tissue is gently recontoured to expose more of your natural teeth.
